hey!

I'm Tilly (she/her), the bones behind TRP. When I was 11, film photography introduced me to my love affair with light, and at 16 I got my very first camera and knew photography was the thing I wanted to do forever! In 2012 during my first year of university at UOW studying Visual Arts, I officially began my photography career.

A few things about me; I have an insane amount of different hobbies, and each time I discover a new hobby it honestly stresses me out a bit because I already have so many other hobbies I like to dedicate time to! I live for the Spring time, I enjoy collecting hot sauces, vinyl records, and crystals, I love thunderstorms, growing and tending to my plants, gardening, and growing flowers in my cut flower garden. I absolutely adore music, it plays a massive role in my life and is so very special to me. I also enjoy art (hence the degree and the career, duh), film photography, listening to podcasts, reading books, making candles, and I have an incredibly strong affinity with animals and nature. I loooove spending time in nature whether that’s by going on picnics, bush walks, or camping. I like thrifting, antiquing (or collecting dead people’s stuff), and am passionate about living a sustainable and eco-friendly life (and it's only natural that my business also reflects this, which is why I’m an ambassador for Mindfully Wed; an eco-ethical wedding education hub). Going to the movies, visiting museums or National Parks is always a fun time for me, I also love researching my family tree, and learning about history such as local and natural history (including flora, fauna, minerals, fossils, dinosaurs etc). It’s also a pipe dream of mine to discover and excavate a dinosaur fossil one day (only half joking). I'm addicted to horror, true crime, the macabre, the occult, anything and everything 'creepy', including taxidermy and collecting curiosities & oddities. The Office, Parks & Rec, and Broad City are my favourite tv shows to ever exist, and any Louis Theroux or David Attenborough documentaries are my fave.

I love to connect with like-minded people, so hopefully there’s something in there that we have in common! If we do, I’d love to hear all about it! After all, to tell your story accurately I think it’s pretty important we create a connection :)

My shooting style…

I label myself as a 'lifestyle photographer' as I do not limit myself to any one genre of photography - I'm there for all of it; the weddings, the engagements, the music, and even the birth sessions - I'm there for the life moments! My style is very natural, real and raw, and focuses on honest & intimate moments. I like to keep things fun and casual - the little in between moments make for the best photos afterall!

When I'm shooting, I navigate between two styles and methods of photographing to create one cohesive narrative. The session will either call for a lifestyle or documentary style of shooting - or a combination of both at different times.

Not quite sure of the difference between lifestyle and documentary? To put it simply, lifestyle is a method of shooting where the photographer's hand gently guides or influences the scene. I may remove distracting items from the scene, pose the subjects naturally and give cues, or reposition the subject for best available lighting.

However, documentary is shot without interference from the photographer, so with no room to manipulate the scene before me, I am left to tell the story as it is. Without making adjustments such as posing or giving cues, I am free to focus on the authentic moments unfolding before me.

Utilising these two methods of shooting allows me to do what I do best; tell your story.

I understand having your photo taken can be a point of anxiety or nerves for most, because let's be real, it can seem daunting and intimidating having professional photos taken. My goal is always to try and make the process of photography as easy and comfortable as possible for you, and maybe even kinda fun!

I like to pick up on my client's personalities and work alongside them in a way that will compliment them and their character, and bring out the best in them; as individuals, as a duo, as a family - whatever the dynamic is! During the session I will guide you with poses and prompts, or if posing isn't your style I will give you cues and direction instead so you know what to do. I don't like forcing poses if it means my subjects are going to be uncomfortable, rigid or just not enjoying themselves. But if you’re super playful and willing to give it a go - then sure let’s experiment with posing!

Whether you’re introverted or extroverted - I will adapt myself and my shooting style to work with you and your needs. It is completely my goal to make you *hopefully* forget you're even having your photo taken.

This is me and my amazing love of mine Ryan, who you may see with me at weddings. Not wanting to miss any of those special and fleeting in-between moments, and also wanting to share the fun of weddings with someone, I decided to add a permanent second shooter to my wedding packages. Ryan has been my second shooter for the last 6 years! He’s an incredibly kind, gentle and sincere soul, and I’m so proud to have him represent the Tilly Roberts Photo brand.

Ryan is a photographer and videographer by trade, and has a strong professional background in photography. I like to think that it was because of our love of photography that brought us together, as we first met each other in a film photography class at uni. Ryan is the golden retriever to my black cat energy, so we balance each other out quite well. Ryan is an extremely talented photographer and knows exactly what he’s doing, which leaves me to concentrate on my job (and luckily doesn’t require me to boss him around... too much).
